Travelling and Working – The Perfect Combo
I think I may have discovered the key to my happy future – travelling and working at the same time! We set off last December for Australia after selling the house and putting everything in store. I retained a number of clients who wanted to continue to work with me via Skype and it worked far better than I could have imagined.
It’s too easy to think that you have to be in the same room as someone to influence, guide and support them. Since returning to the UK for a brief stop over before we go away again, I’ve come across and met a number of business coaches whose whole businesses are run via Skype. I’ve also been asked to join a new business as their Head Business Coach and the best part is that I only need to be back in UK for 2 days a month.
We are basing ourselves out of Morzine for the next 18 months or thereabouts, so travelling back to UK via Geneva or wherever we happen to be travelling in Europe is not really an issue. Flights are so frequent and cheap these days that such arrangements make this sort of contract easy to fulfil, leaving my wife and me plenty of time to travel for the other 28 days! All the rest of the work can be done via Skype at my client’s convenience.
It’s been a real revelation and very exciting for me and Tracey. We have really enjoyed our travels so far covering Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, The USA and Canada and our intention was always to travel in Europe over the next 18 months or so. We’ve both secured jobs in Morzine for the Ski Season with Getaway Vans. I’ve qualified and passed my bus licence and Certificate of Professional Competence, so I’ll be doing airport transfers between Morzine/Les Get/Avoriaz to Geneva and back. Tracey is doing airport rep and back office admin and for both of us there will be plenty of time off for skiing – which is the real reason we are working there! If you’re coming to the Porte Soleil area this winter, book your transfer through Getawayvans and we may see you at the airport!
Once the season is over, we’ve decided to stay in Morzine and travel around Europe from there. This gives us a nice base and we’re so central that it will be easy to travel from there. My UK work can continue from wherever we travel and support our fun.
So there you have it – our plans for the next 18 months. Lots of time for fun, lots of time for relaxing but still able to work productively for around a week a month from where-ever we happen to be.
Travelling and working is possible – you just have to find your niche and realise your potential. We’ll keep you posted.
